2013 PMF: Awaiting Results

It seems there hasn't been a great deal of information coming out of the PMF Program Office recently, but I guess everyone is waiting for the results to be posted.  I figure you might want a thread to discuss it.  Be sure to let us know if you hear anything, good or bad.

  3. I thought it was interesting that the assessors asked us to discuss/evaluate the other candidates during the assessment.

  4. @Rachel I felt the same way in my assessment and from talking to others from my program.

I felt like the entire assessment was geared around the group exercise since we spent much more time on that activity compared to the others and the press conference was based on the outcome in the group exercise.

  5. Does anyone have a good sense of when the job fair will be? Late spring is so vague.... I'm planning on taking a trip to the east coast and would like it to overlap with the job fair just in case, but we have no info.

  6. Rachel, I think you are right, I have not spoken to anyone who excelled in all areas. I could have done much better on my individual interview, I was so nervous and it was also the first portion of my day.

Did everyone have the same $30 million group presentation, if so, were you all able to come to a conclusion on how to split the $30 million?

It was quite challenging to adapt to each exercise, but I think overall, I did very well, except for one question in my individual interview :( but I leave it in the hands of God. :)

  7. Here is another "save the date" I found for those who will be fortunate enough to get to the finalist level.

I am surprised that the costs of transportation is covered by the agency.

  8. I think I did well, but I am not going to count my eggs before they hatch. I am more worried about the sequester and how it will impact this years cohort. I have already emailed OBM and DOD, and they both said they were in a hiring freeze for now. It is pointless to go to a career fair in the Spring when there are no jobs available. Anyone have some insight on this?

    1. Hi Don,

Did DOD and OMB specify that the freeze included PMF positions as well?

      Best,

    2. Sean,

Quick disclaimer: I am just a semi-finalist and only know what I have read on the internet about the PMF program. Any feedback would be great!

I emailed DOD and OMB to inquire about what openings are available for PMF's. OMB replied saying that they do not think they will be hiring any PMF's this year because of the sequestor, but it was still possible to do rotations there. (I believe that you get hired on by a specific agency that funds your two years, and they pay for you to do the rotation at OMB). DOD stated that they are in a hiring freeze until March 27th, and is not sure what will happen after that date.

I decided to stop contacting agencies until the finalist list comes out and then worry about who is in a hiring freeze and who is not. I think the sequestor is a concern for all of the semi-finalists, but not sure how. I am also not sure about all the details of who funds who within the PMF program or if selected, how this will impact 2013 cohort, but am willing to learn if anyone knows something.

      Hope this helps.

Congrats to everyone and good luck!

      Don

    1. How do you know it will reduce the number of finalists? Have you heard anything like that from someone credible?

My thoughts are that if there there is a need from the agencies to hire PMFs, as you suggest, they would increase the number of finalists this year. Or at least not lower the number.

I say, increase the number of finalists and let us fight it out for the jobs!

  10. I have been stalking the PMF website and today the finalist information page states
"This web page is down for maintenance as we are preparing to post the list of Finalists. Please check back regularly for any updates. Thank you."

    1. Jen,

Yeah, I came across that site late last week and unfortunately it's been like that since the first I've seen of it.

I'm still hoping for mid-late next week some time, but I suppose we can't really know for sure. The only thing I can say now from experience is that checking the page on an hourly basis only makes things worse. :)

      Stay strong and good luck!

    2. Stephen,

I know that you warned me about obsessing over this list, but I can't help it. I feel like the creature from The Lord of the Rings; "I need my precious!" I'm developing ADD and losing sleep. I really need to find something to take my mind off of it. I've been reading discussions from previous years and the obsessive ones seem to be the ones that are disappointed. I'm just ready for the results so I can move on either way.

    3. Jen,

      Ha! Aren't we all.

I'm hopeful that the few of us that have used this resource do, in fact, make it as finalists. It just shows how much we all truly want it.

The fact to remember, however, is that if we do end up becoming finalists, there are MANY waits ahead before coming in to a position as a fellow.

Perhaps this wait can be a valuable lesson for those still to come.

      Best of luck!

    1. I'm not sure that's the case at all. During the migration to a new system, I am guessing the old system will still be doing stuff. But that's just speculation on my part.

      Delete
    2. That is probably true, since the announcement only makes mention of "current" fellows not having access.

In the case that the old system is offline for everyone, perhaps that means we'll be informed before March 22 at noon when it goes offline.

    3. This is horrible, I cannot wait anymore. I actually turned down a job offer because of the slight possibility that I may make it as a finalist. All we really needed is a date, I do not understand why it is so difficult to provide a set date as to when the finalists would be announced. In the real world, can we really say "I'll get that project done by the end of March"? I doubt it. Especially not on a government level. I mean even if they update the facebook page, at least every week, we wouldn't "all" be on edge about this. I honestly as many stated did not expect to get selected as a semi-finalist and when I saw my name on that list, I don't think I was ever happier, besides when my children were born :) Now, like Jen, I really feel that this is my best chance at getting a government job.

Ugh, sorry, I just had to get that out of my system.

    4. That is a good point Catherine, now that will just keep me more on edge through today and tomorrow :)

  12. Another day and no news! I’m sure that you all are looking for something to occupy your thoughts also, so I will tell you about my experience so far……

I was thinking about when I got the email that I was a semi-finalist. I was in total shock. I actually had forgotten that I had even applied for the program. I had heard about it a year ago and just assumed that it was only for those perfect students with a 4.0 GPA and no life; and there was no way I would ever get it.

The day of the deadline the career counselor was a guest lecturer in my Capstone class and asked how many of the students had applied. More than half the class raised their hands. I knew that some of them were nowhere near perfect students and I figured why not give it a try.

Three hours before midnight, I began the application, without any knowledge of the tips and tricks that I know now. I submitted a general resume, completed the online assessment, and very quickly wrote the essays. It was 10 minutes till 12 before I knew it and with no time to even proof read, I pressed submit. Of course I thought I had no chance and never thought about it again.

The day I got the semi-finalist email gave me new found hope. Out of all those students that raised their hands, I was the only one selected. I have since become totally immersed in the PMF program. I have officially "drank the kool-aide" and feel that this program is the best (not only) way for me to become successful in the federal government. While I am optimistic about being selected as a finalist; I now have a new appreciation for the program after going through the process. If I am not selected, I definitely plan come back bigger and better next year!

Good luck to all and hopefully we will get results before I feel compelled to write another lame post!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Jen,

Not lame! I read a post on LinkedIn about the PMF and applied not thinking I was going to make it this far, and here we are!! It will be a great story for when you are selected.

    All,

I wanted to ask some questions to pass the time. I will number them but don’t feel like answering all of them at once. Hopefully this opens up some discussions to keep our nerves calm while we wait…

    1. I read that you have up to one year to find a job. When does this magic date begin? I assume it is whenever the finalist list comes out but wanted to verify, mostly because previous year PMF's have already had their career fair by now.

    2. If selected, but I wanted to take the rest of the year off and look for a job in January 2014, how would I do this?

    3. I just finished my Masters, but have been selected for a doctorate program that will take another three years. If selected as a finalist, but I decide to go for the doctorate, could I apply again for the PMF, or would there be an issue because I turned it down this year? (Doctorate degree was my plan B for if I did not get selected, so I am just weighing my options).

    4. I heard that DOD selects 7 PMFs a year, and that this is competitive. Can anyone clarify this? If true, do other agencies have a highly competitive selection for "top jobs?" (I'm sure all PMF jobs are competitive, but are there some more than others? I would not want to waste time and effort on a position that someone else may want badly, where as I would think it would be kind of cool to work there and not have my heart set on that job).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies

    1. 5. Do some agencies give a job offer before the career fair based off of prior work experience and/or resume? Or do they only offer these jobs at the career fair? (Could save time and money for all if they did, just saying).

      6. For the career fair, is it only for finding jobs or is there other things going on there such as orientations, intro to PMF program, meeting the POTUS, etc.

      7. Are we assigned a "PMF Advisor" before the career fair, or do we have to find a job first and then receive guidance from that agency?

      8. If I found a job with a government agency in some remote location, would it be wiser to take the two years and bounce around with other agencies to get more experience with the federal government, and then take on the job after the two years, or would it be smarter to do the two years at that agency to learn all I can about that location and then take a full time position there?

      9. If not selected this year, can we still apply for next year? I know this may sound dumb, but does not making the cut this year eliminate future chances with the PMF program?

      10. If we do a rotation between agencies, do we get paid time off in between the rotations to visit family or travel?

      11. If selected, does going to the career fair improve your chances of getting a job, or could we just contact the specific agency we want to work for and just coordinate with them on positions? (The government is not the only one that is on a budget!)

      12. If I wanted to work as an agent with FBI, HSI, DEA, etc., but also do the PMF, could I do both? I know they require attending an 1811 academy to become special agents (and carry a gun), but that job requires specific duties in law enforcement. The idea I am trying to get at is they require managers as well that are qualified as an 1811. Could PMF provide an opportunity for becoming an 1811 AND being a manager? Or do managers within the 1811 series have to “grow up” in that agency?

13a. If I apply for an agency that requires a security clearance, but end up working for an agency that does not require one, would we be able to maintain that security clearance for future opportunities? (I understand the requirement for “need to know,” but if I wanted to move around between agencies in the future as a manager, would the security clearance help in getting a new position or would I have to go through the whole process again before transferring?).
13b. I do not have all the facts on this question so if someone could help out that would be great! In regards to security clearances, if I get a DOD security clearance, but do a rotation with DHS (that requires a DHS security clearance), and then do a rotation with FBI (who requires yet a separate security clearance different from DHS AND DOD), and then do a rotation with OMB (that I assume would require a separate clearance different from DOD, DHS, and FBI because of your access to the POTUS), would I be just “collecting” security clearances to do these rotations, or would I only be restricted to the agency that I have a security clearance from?

      14. Can a PMF get hired on by a Senator/Congress member after the two years, or are these just rotational opportunities?

      15. If a train departs Boston at 0732 traveling 46 MPH North, with a full capacity…( Ya right kids, hope that puts a smile on your face!) I am trying to wait patiently, but have been thinking a lot about how the PMF opportunity works and wanted to share some of my thoughts.

There are obviously a lot of questions about the PMF program and hopefully opening up this discussion will burn some time and make it easier to check in on this thread every day. (I know that I get excited when there is a new post!)

      Good luck everyone!

      Don

    2. Here are some answers to a few of your questions, as well as a useful link to help with the job fair if you are a finalist.

For question 1, yes it is when the finalist list comes out.
      2. I doubt that you can take time off before you even begin, however, you can certainly negotiate with your new agency if you are chosen.
      3. I am not sure if you can join this program again with a doctorate, however, you can apply again next year if you do not get in this year.
      5. Yes, I read that agencies can participate in interviews beforehand, some have had interviews via telephone and meet even before the job fair.
      6. I think it’s only for the job fair.
      9. You can definitely apply next year as long as you graduated this year, you have two years after graduation to apply.
      11. The career fair is definitely a big plus, almost 80% of finalists walk away with a job offer from the career fair. I do not remember where I saw this.

Take a look at this, it was very helpful. Good luck!

    3. I am just one PMF and I want to caution that each PMF year and experience is different so I will try to answer some of your questions, but keep in mind they are my experiences and not applicable to you or maybe anyone else.

      1. Magic Date: When the list is posted, one year from that date.
      2. Taking Off: You could but I would highly suggest not doing that, most of the positions are posted and giving within the first 6 months. Although if you land a job you can negotiate start date with your employer.
      5. Offers before Fair: Yes, I recieved an offer roughly a month before the job fair, they found me and I used the job fair week for my first face-to-face interview and tour of agency.
      6. Career Fair: First day orientation, 2nd and 3rd are job fair.
      7. Advisor: No not assigned an advisor, although I think it is a good idea.
      10. PTO: No, you are an FTE, if you have leave you can use it, but I don't think there is too many other options than that.
      11. Job Fair Chances: I would say it depends, everyone is different, some people had offers going in, some got offers at the job fair, and some of the interviews at the fair resulted in jobs months down the road, and some candidates probably didn't have luck at any of it.
13a. Clearance: That is a discussion for your supervisor.
13b: Clearance for rotation: Yes, you would be required to get one if it is needed, and could be a justification to get one if your job doesn't require it.

Ok well, I cant answer all of your questions, but I hope it helps!!!

    6. @ktgrca - so the benefits package with the positions isn't the same with other positions since there is no PTO? is there healthcare?

@Don- I read somewhere in my extensive google search that rotations are not typical because the agency that hires you has to continue to pay you the whole time, and they don't necessarily want to fund your 2 years and then you go off to another agency at the end. I don't know if you were just hypothesizing or if you really are set are rotating through all those agencies, but I would be just be aware that may not be attractive to some agencies that are hiring if you come in already looking to leave them (not that I see anything wrong with rotating and I probably would do it too if I could, but from their perspective that may be how it looks)

      Delete
    7. @19 there is PTO, the author, I think, was saying that you get the standard leave time, there is no additional time between rotations. At my agency, I have seen PMFs on rotation working at the current position up until 10pm the night before their rotation, and coming back at 5pm the day their rotation ends. It is an intense level of commitment.

I have seen people with both internal and external rotations. It depends on the needs/resources of the agency at the time.

  17. So, if I get the PMF, it means taking a 10-30k paycut, giving up managing my 10 people and losing about 3k in bonuses which I will have to repay. However, after well over 1000 Fed applications and only 2 interviews, 8 years apart, neither of which resulted in an offer it feels like the only way to get into the government. My current position equivalent would be a GS-14, but I'd be stepping down to at most a 12, and likely not managing anyone for a while.

Anyone else in this situation? Anyone have thoughts on how I should proceed?

    1. Bonnie, I would be in a similar situation: taking a substantial pay cut and (temporarily) losing managerial responsibilities over a larger team. Fortunately, I don’t know the results yet, which means that I don’t have to speed up the decision-making process. In addition to taking into account current pay and career path, you should listen to your gut. I work at a very dynamic organization where you can feel the engaging energy coming from every co-worker and even the office architecture. I didn’t experience that kind of atmosphere at the semi-final in DC, it was rather lethargic and stifling. This experience highlighted to me how important soft job characteristics are to me, considering I’ll have to be in that environment 40-50 hours per week.

      Delete
  18. Bonnie,

I have 13 years of consecutive experience in the legal field as a paralegal earning about 80-90K per year, and I would be taking a huge paycut. Also, even though I have some experience, if I am a finalist and offered a position, I might still only be offered a GS9 pay scale so it would be about 30-40K less. However, I personally cannot be a paralegal any longer, I want to do more, have a higher position, and actually do something where I feel I am making a difference. I also have children and would have to move to the DC area since most positions are there, however, making it to this fellowship would be an extraordinary experience, the training, the experience itself working on a government level, we would sacrifice the salary, and bonuses and moving, etc., for a leadership position and the potential in the next 5-10 years to make over 100K. I think it's definitely worth it. You have to weigh the pros and cons. If you are in a position where you see long-term growth and you are happy, then maybe stay, but if you are looking for a change and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, then I would stick to PMF if we are fortunate to make it to the finalist level. :) Just my two cents. Good luck!

    1. Thanks Amy,

I guess I shouldn't be counting my chickens before they hatch (goodness I hope they tell us on Monday- waiting is killing me)- but its good to know someone else with a lot of post-grad experience is as excited as I am about this program. I work in a Fed agency as a contractor, and its been made clear to me in the past that our PMFs are viewed as my junior here- although obviously I can't direct them as a contractor- its a weird position to be in. I guess its wait and see for me, I can't see going below a GS12, that in itself is a scary step to still pay the mortgage- I have a JD, MS and over a decade of professional experience. But, I'm excited about the opportunity, I've wanted to work for the fed since I was about 7 years old- and this seems like the way to do it. Thanks for the reassurance I made the right choice to go for it. fingers crossed that I get the chance to make the tough decision!

    2. OMG, I still have some hope that they will post it tonight. It just doesn't make sense for them to post todays' data as the updated date since yesterday, so I am hoping that before midnight we will get our answer. I want to know already, so I can move on with my life :)

For future pmf semi-finalists I would recommend that you do not depend on this program as your only option, apply to other places. I actually turned down a job a few weeks ago because I knew that there was the slightest chance of making it to finalist, but it is driving me crazy, and I really would not wish someone to go through this anxiety knowing that it is my only option as of now.

Of course if I am not selected, I will just have to begin my search all over again for the ideal career. I feel as though I am at a point of being obsessed with wanting this and that's never healthy.

Hoping and praying that this ends soon. :)

      Good night!

    4. Do they hire people in at above GS9? I was under the impression that everyone was on the same page and started at GS9, and then would have the opportunity to be promoted up by the end the program at GS12?

      Delete
    5. They can hire you up to GS12, and they can promote you up to GS13 during your tenure. I don't know the stats, but would assume 80% or more of the appointments are GS9. However, with over a decade of post JD experience, I'd not settle for a GS9, I don't love my current job, but I don't see taking a 60k paycut.

    1. So 60% of about 650 (2012 finalists) gets you about 390 appointments.

But I think you also need to consider that many individuals selected as finalist chose not to seek appointments.

  21. Hi guys. So glad to see activity on this page now that we are getting closer. My in person interview went good (I think). The other people in my group were visibly shaken/nervous and some were even so over the top confrontational during the group exercise that I can't see anything I said being considered inappropriate. I was shocked really. Everything I read said they wanted to see how you worked as a team, and this one person clearly did no research or prep before hand because it was all about "his show" when we came in.

I have googled and researched this program to death, and at this point all I can do is wait for a yes or no. Apparently I went on travelocity and looked at flights and hotels in DC, because every week now I get an email about how cheap something is! It always seems to come right at the second I forgot about not hearing back yet. I did the in person interview February 11th I think, to purposely avoid a long wait to hear back. I'm so impatient, and this whole program has tested me as a person just because it's completely about waiting!

    1. Hi Chan,

My assessment experience was quite different. Everyone in the group was prepared, calm, and non-confrontational. We all worked as a team, compromised quickly, and came up with a plan. I feel I did a pretty good job throughout the process, however, I thought everyone else did too. Since there was no clear weak link, it made me second guess myself.

I would have actually preferred to be in your situation. Due to the nervousness and aggressiveness in your group, I'm sure your personality really helped you to stand out. Hopefully, we will all know soon if good was good enough.

      Good luck!

      Delete
    2. Yeah I definitely felt good after I left. After our group exercise, we were walking back to the holding room and even my group commented that they felt I did really good. And since I was #1, I went first in everything, so I think that shook them up even more. I know the judges aren't supposed to judge you against each other (I think I read that somewhere), but one of the essay questions and one of the questions during the press conference seemed to want to us to judge each other, which was a little odd to me.

  23. I think we will get the finalist list on March 31, which day do you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. My guess is March 28. This is based on 3 assumptions:

      1. They will do it before the weekend (so the 30th and 31st are out).
      2. They will take as much time as they can (this brings us toward the end of the week).
      2. They will post it in the evening since in the past they have posted results in the evening (this eliminates Friday, since they will probably leave on time on Friday).

So, I get Thursday, March 28.

I hope its first thing tomorrow morning though!

    2. I do too, it's logical. I figured if I expect it on the last day of March, I won't have to deal with even higher anxiety levels.

  24. Has anyone been able to log into the application system? I got an error message, I think they must be updating everyone's status..... or I am hoping so!

    1. yea it lets you in occasionally to see your semi-finalist status, but other times I get the error message as well. I don't think that is where we are going to be notified. I believe the email is going to state whether you made it or not.

      Delete
    2. Well, you can login. If you cannot, so your password must need change. Check-it-out. Some agencies have access to finalists: http://www.fs.fed.us/fsjobs/pmf.shtml.

SO, we must hear soon. Waiting, waiting, just waiting....

      Delete
    3. I think at some point it will also say your finalist status as well as an email

      Delete
    4. Yes they will update the system to reflect you are a finalist, you will get an email and the list will be published. I read however, that we would be getting the email before the list is published.

      Delete
    5. @Amy that seems to be the way it has worked in past years. At least it leads to stalking my inbox instead of the webpage?

      Delete
  25. I have read just about everything available about PMF, however, there are still a few questions of which I have not found answers. For example, if we are a finalist and live outside of the DC area, making a move to DC, with a family would be major, do you think that the agencies would most likely hire those who already live in DC? Also, if they do hire you, when do you actually move and how much time would they give you? I have also read that they can provide relocation expenses of up to 25% of your yearly salary, however, I am not sure if this is for sure, has anyone read about this or know someone who did get relocation expenses covered?

Please let me know if there are unanswered questions I can help with. :)

    Thanks

    1. I think pretty much everything is up for negotiation. I would prioritize what you want/need to make this work, find a job you like, and once you have them on board to hire you, work with them to find something that benefits both sides. Remember that if chosen, you are considered the best of the best, and that if you are a good fit, the agency will want you. It is a lot easier to get what you want on the front end than regret what you didn't ask for later.

      Delete
    2. Thank you, that makes sense. I guess now to actually make it....lol

You are so right, I've been in situations where I would have negotiated at first and didn't and later did regret it.

Good luck to you, I really hope you get it.

    3. Hi Amy! I'm a current PMF, and I moved across the country for get this job. I had a few offers, one gave me relocation up front, and one of them I was able to negotiate relocation once I had the offer.

It'll depend on the job, but no one outrightly asked for my location. Also, since it's something that HR can decide and often they do use it to get people into the District, the hiring managers often have very little incentive not to offer you relocation. Hope it helps!

Good luck Ryan! I know you'll get it!

    3. Yea it just sucks that they wait until late to post things haha...I guess this is truly testing my patience. I should be well versed in this having been in the military and experiencing the "hurry up and wait" the government often puts you through. Unfortunately, I can't stay focused now that it is practically time for them to tell us!

    4. I had a dream last night that I received the email, and I was selected.

And then I woke up... Work productivity is nonexistent.

    5. its ok, it is good practice for being in government. Waiting for the many layers of approval and concurrence on a project can be torture. If we get it, it will be totally worth the wait. If we don't we can be satisfied knowing that no other wait for the call on a job will be as painful.

      Delete
    6. Ryan,

If your prior service I think your chances are good. I know the statistics from last years finalist were 18 percent veteran. I don't see more veterans than that having graduate degrees and applying for this program. I thought that was really high, but if all veterans get selected as finalist, that would make sense fro that number to be where it is. Good Luck and I am a veteran as well so I really hope those numbers are the same this year, if not higher.

      Delete
    7. so much for my gut feelings. tomorrow maybe.

    8. Sooooo.....I can't believe they are having us wait until the last possible day of the month! The waiting has been HELL! I've researched the last few years and none of the notifications were on a Friday, so unless they are into cruel and unusual punishment, I hope that we will be put out of our misery tomorrow.

      Good luck everyone!

    9. I too am a veteran and have been trying to get a GS job for about 5 years. I have 10 point veteran preference, but have not had any luck with any usajobs.gov postings. I was told by a DHS veteran employment office a few years ago that I needed to have a higher education than other veterans with 10 point preference to be more competitive because a lot of these veterans are competing with each other for the same job. So I went back to school and here I am. They were very clear though that veteran’s preference does not guarantee employment.

I know we have veteran preference with PMF, but it will be interesting to see if it even matters. A lot of talk and money is put into hiring veterans in the federal government, but the majority of veterans I know have had no luck. Even though 18% were veterans last year, how many veterans applied but did not make it?

I wanted to mention this for future PMF veteran applicants so that they can get
a feel for what to expect. I’m not trying to be political, just present the facts. Everyone thinks that veteran preference is a golden ticket into the federal government, but my personal experience has been different.

      Thanks all,

      Don

  29. So, the "update" to the Current Finalist page on March 22nd was probably related to a data migration they're doing.

"NOTE: From March 22 - April 8, 2013, the PMF Program's on-line systems will be down to conduct a data migration from the old system to the new system." (http://www.pmf.gov/become-a-pmf/find-a-job/job-search.aspx)

I have so many things to do and I cannot focus on even one. I'm still taking classes and cannot even catch up with my work since it's Spring Break. What a break it is!!

I emailed last week as well asking if the TAS would affect the release of the date and they said "All Semi-Finalists will be notified via email and the list of Finalists posted to the PMF website." So I am not sure what to think.

    2013 PMF Assessment Preparation Guide
2013 PMF Semi-Finalists Scheduling NoticesThe PMF Program Office is presently validating all in-person assessment scores in the selection of Finalists for the PMF Class of 2013. As we complete our quality control measures, we anticipate Finalists will be announced in early-April. The timeline has been adjusted to reflect this.

In an effort to reduce travel costs for Finalists, acknowledge agency budget cuts, and reduce program overhead, the PMF Job Fair will be held "virtually" May 1-3, 2013, for the PMF Class of 2013 Finalists and participating agencies. As logistical details become available, we will update the PMF website.

We are also transitioning to a new PMF Talent Acquisition System (TAS) where agencies will post their PMF job opportunities for Finalists. The PMF TAS is expected to launch within the next couple of weeks. The PMF website will be updated to include additional instructions for Finalists on how to use the PMF TAS to search and apply for PMF positions.

We appreciate your continued interest in the Program and your patience as we validate in-person assessment scores to determine the Class of 2013 Finalists, and enhance our on-line systems. Thank you.

    1. Not psyched. I think it takes something away from the experience to be sitting behind a computer screen while I'm interviewing for a job. There's a lot to be said for getting to express your personality in a job interview situation and to get a feel for the type of people who are hiring you as well.

  77. So now we have to wait until April AND they canceled the job fair. How is the "online job fair" any different from usajobs? I'm sorry but this is ridiculous.

  78. Have you all seen the website today? Finalist update early April and the job fair will be "virtual" on May 1-3.............http://pmf.gov/news-events/2013-pmf-finalists-update.aspx

  79. Hey, look at the bright side. No last minute $500 flight to DC for the job fair... And, it seems that a lot of you will sleep better and will not be constantly monitoring for results, at least this weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  80. What nonsense is that?
They go big and produce inspiring clips to excite candidates who are already excited about the prospect of becoming a PMF. And now they don't have enough money for the most important stage of the process? If I remember correctly, there were multiple voices in the superfluous clip they showed at the semi-final who stressed the importance of the job fair. I'm sorry- virtual can't replace in-person experiences, which are a crucial element for both job seeker and future employer.

    ReplyDelete
  81. *Sigh*. Anyone else really disappointed by the "virtual" job fair? I feel as though we will have less of a chance to make an impression and less of a shot at jobs. I don't mind waiting another week to get the results but I think the elimination of the job fair is going to really hurt our chances. Thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  82. I generally have mixed feelings about all this. I'm glad they are taking extra time to get the information right, but I really think they could have said so at the beginning of the week. Don't wait until practically the last hour to drop a bomb like that. You knew you weren't going to have the rechecks done on time. Come on....

Since they are saying as well that they are dealing with the system upgrade, I am sure they are worried about repeating previous mistakes with the duplicate emails and such. Because of that, I am not going to start getting super antsy until we get to April 8th when the system upgrade is allegedly supposed to be done. But thats only if they don't change that date too -___-

As far are the virtual job fair. Part of me is happy, because the cost of that trip was going to be substantial for me. That movie Hostel a few years ago has ruined me and any possibility of me ever staying in one. So I was going to have to cough up the dough to stay in hotel, which was not cheap, plus a flight. And if I left that job fair without an offer in hand, I would be quite upset because I would want to start recouping that money spent ASAP. Now as far as how they are going to handle it, did anyone do the virtual job fair that I think it was govloop had? I didn't attend, but I wonder if it will be similar. I think this is going to make it much more hectic. Agencies are going to have to be more diligent about reaching out, and students are going to annoy the hell outta some places trying to get responses via email or phone. Making this basically all digital based, and not providing for face to face time is going to really put us at a disadvantage, not being able to walk up to a booth for an agency we maybe had not considered isn't going to happen. And from all the info I have seen, that's how a lot of PMFs got their jobs. Additionally, since maybe not everyone could come to the physical location for the job fair, there was slightly less competition. But now if we can just skype in and chat, EVERY PMF with internet will be there, so the competition just increased ten fold. And will it be like 8 hour days on the computer?? I have to use 3 vacation days (for a job I could very well be leaving and then have to pay back that vacation time if I haven't earned it yet) to stay at home and skype/call for a job interview??? I would rather they just cancel the whole concept, let the agencies post stuff and then make arrangements to either interview in person or over the phone on individual basis.

I can only hope that the money they are supposedly saving doing this virtually will go into the budget to hire on more PMFs.

    1. I understand your mixed feelings with the job fair. I too see both the pros and cons, the pro being saving money and time. I was not looking forward to leaving my children for 3-4 days again. However, on the downside, the job fair would have allowed us to meet new people in person, I was really looking forward to the experience.

Nevertheless, since we have no other choice, I am trying to focus on all the good things about it. We will save at least $1000 (about $200 per night and airfare/train fare). Also, many people find jobs even before the job fair, so you might not even have to "attend". I also think we will have options to have choose booths, set up interviews and do almost everything we would have done if we attended the job fair in person. So don't worry too much about it, just make the best of it by getting prepared. Here is a good site that explains virtual job fairs a bit more.

      http://www.groovejob.com/resources/student-resources/how-does-a-virtual-job-fair-work.html

Also, someone mentioned that they are not sure about the financial situation of the program since PMF is not having a job fair, however, from what I read, when and if we are hired by an agency, that agency has to pay the PMF program, or OPM a $7000 fee.

I am rather disappointed that they waited for the last day to let us know that it would be postponed, and yet, cannot provide us with a set date. This part is quite irritating. I really do not understand the need for all the "secrecy" or unknown. I hate that we need to once again panic and check out emails and the PMF site over and over again.

I too hope that the money saved will be put into the budget for future PMF applicants, as this program is quite an opportunity and I would hate to see it disappear due to budget issues or individuals who view one or two mistakes (last year's incident) as unprofessional or unworthy.

Good luck to you again. :)

  83. I think the idea of a virtual job fair is ridiculous, personally. Why bother with holding a job fair in the first place, if it's so expensive? It seems to me that it wouldn't add any benefit over just being on a roster of finalists.

  84. If the OPM can't afford to hold a job fair, it really doesn't make me feel confident that the agencies have to money to hire on PMF's in the first place. This is pretty unacceptable. People, including myself, have passed up lucrative and rewarding job offers for a chance to become a PMF. This whole debacle is making me really question the program and a career with the fed gov. I don't even know what to think anymore. And a virtual job fair? You have to be kidding me. I don't even know where to start...

    1. I didn't have high expectations from the beginning, mainly because of the current austere budge climate, public misconception of federal workers, and hostage of federal sector jobs/salary...Honestly, I didn't think anything would come of this anyways. It is astonishing that folks here would turn down job offers in the hopes of a PMF appointment, this is unimaginable to me. Anyways, it is a shame that the lawmakers/politicians/public take a short-sighted approach to the feds, willing to cut, slash, freeze hiring, stop investments in research... but that is where we are now.

  85. I agree with the above.....One of the best aspects of the job fair was actually getting in front of someone to showcase your talent.....Now, it will be how good do you look on paper.... My in-person assessment went well and I was with very educated people, however, some of them had no personality and was someone you wouldn't want working for you in a leadership position. You can't see that X-factor on paper......

  88. Love the virtual fair. It will save me money (as my family is strapped). It will save money for agencies. More of us will be placed. SO, cheer up!!!!

A Question about this sentence in the Notice --- "The PMF Program Office is presently validating all in-person assessment scores in the selection of Finalists for the PMF Class of 2013."

Does this mean that validators are not looking at other things like the resume and essays (with the application). SO, only the in-person counts and nothing else. Anyone has thoughts? THANKS!

    1. Really? I real that they do not consider your resume in the online assessment but they do in your in-person assessment. When I had my individual interview, they did refer to my resume. So I do think it is considered in this final stage.

    2. In my interview they talked a lot about my essay answers, and some of that was also on my resume. I feel like they use that as a basis to personalize the questions, but I wonder if they really give it consideration as to who would be qualified- i.e. work experience, past job duties, etc.

    3. From what I've heard in the past, the resume is only used once you are a finalist, for agencies to search for candidates. Only the online assessment is used in the first round (including essays) and in the second round it is only what happened in the in person assessment.

  91. It's too tentative for me to complain about the virtual job fair (I did not feel that I in any way blew it out of the park during the in-person interview, but I'm still trying to stay positive). My big concern is that a virtual job fair would benefit finalists on the east coast, especially those currently living in DC. My thinking was that if an agency really liked a person on paper and that person lives in DC already, that finalist could be invited to an in-person interview or even just a discussion over coffee. A person on the west coast or the midwest would likely not be offered this opportunity, and I don't believe many of the people hiring would want or expect a finalist to fly out unless there was a decent chance that the finalist would get the position. I feel it is easier to feel more attached to a person you've actually met in-person (especially when all of the candidates have outstanding credentials).

I'm divided because on the one hand, if you can meet your possible future employer and they can meet you at little cost, it really doesn't make sense not to get together. On the other hand, I want everyone to be given a fair opportunity.

  92. So, does anybody think the results will be out this week.....or is everyone thinking next week after the 8th?

  93. How about April 15th, certainly by then, they can verify the scores?? =)

  94. Well, we can rest easy knowing that they'll tell us by May 1st...

    1. Haha, don't be so certain. As I'm watching the PMF videos on youtube, I am also realizing how important the job fair is in earning an appointment.

  95. Well please take this with a grain of salt, but on the pmf website, under "next steps" it states:

"Check for PMF appointment opportunities in the PMF TAS (Talent Acquisition System). The TAS will launch shortly after Finalists are announced. Agencies may use the TAS to advertise their appointment and rotational opportunities. Finalists log into the PMF TAS and follow the prompts to search for opportunities."

So I am certain we will be hearing shortly before the launch of the TAS system which is April 9. I am hoping for Wed-Fri of this week, although, I am usually quite optimistic. :)
